Open the Mongoose BMX bikes and you hit a wall of names: Legion, Rebel, Skid, Title, even a Tot. They all say Mongoose on the frame, but they don't all do the same job. This guide explains what each family is for, what the bikes cost at our shop right now, and which one fits your rider. In a hurry? Jump to the quick-pick table.

It started with a wheel

In 1974, Skip Hess started a company at his home in Simi Valley, California. It was called BMX Products, Inc., and its first product wasn't a bike. It was a wheel: the Motomag, cast in magnesium and strong enough for BMX riding. By the mid-1970s Motomags were standard race equipment, and the brand built on them became Mongoose.

Racing was Mongoose's first home. In the late 1970s it began sponsoring racers like Jeff "Koz" Kosmala and Eric "Big Daddy" Rupe. In 1979 came the Supergoose, one of the most recognizable BMX bikes of the 1980s, and Mongoose has brought it back in limited reissues. Freestyle followed with the FS-1 in the mid-1980s, which started the brand's focus on it.

That split is still how the range works. Title is the racing side, with aluminum race bikes. Legion and Rebel are the do-it-all bikes, mostly steel, built for learning tricks. Skid, Switch and Tot are for the littlest riders.

Title: pick by height, not age

Every Title race bike, from Micro to Expert, is a 20" aluminum bike with BMX race geometry, built to go from the pump track to race gate drops. Two kids the same age can be a foot apart, so measure your rider:

Model Rider height Top tube Price
Title Micro 3'3" to 4'0" 16.5" $349.99
Title Mini 4'2" to 4'10" 17.5" $349.99
Title Junior 4'6" to 5'1" 18.5" $349.99
Title Expert 5'3" to 5'8" 19.75" $359.99

Mini and Junior overlap between 4'6" and 4'10". If your rider is in that zone, message us.

Legion and Rebel in a minute

Legion is Mongoose's starting line for first-time BMX riders. Most frames are hi-ten steel (tough, affordable, heavier than aluminum). The MX is built for learning the fundamentals, the L10 for first tricks, and the L20 adds a 127 mm crank and extra-wide 2.3" tires. The Mag is the one for mag-wheel looks.

Rebel has more attitude. The X2 has four pegs and extra-wide grips, the RS1 has a lightweight aluminum race-style frame, and the X24 is the 24" option.

For little riders, the Skid comes in 12" ($129.99), 16" ($169.99), 18" ($179.99) and 20" ($189.99). The 18" has a steel frame, bar and frame pads and training wheels included.

The Mongoose bikes people ask about most

Legion is a ladder: Mongoose says the line runs from a first true BMX bike up to the L500. Some of the most-searched rungs, and a few other favorites, aren't on our shelves right now, so here's what they are, from Mongoose's own specs:

  • Legion L60: hi-ten steel, 3-piece crank, 20 x 2.35" tires.
  • Legion L100: a step up, with a 4130 chromoly frame (21" top tube) and a 2-piece chromoly crank. Mongoose says it suits riders from beginner curb jumps to quarter-pipe tricks.
  • Title Pro 24: the Title for bigger riders. Mongoose lists a 21.75" top tube for riders 5'7" to 6'6".
  • Supergoose and FS-1: the 1980s classics. Both have come back as limited Mongoose reissues, and the Supergoose copies the 1984 loop-tail frame.

FAQ

What's the difference between a Mongoose Legion and a Title?

Title bikes are aluminum race bikes sized by rider height. Legion bikes are steel first BMX bikes for learning the basics and first tricks.

What's the difference between the Legion L60 and L100?

Per Mongoose's 2026 specs, the L60 has a hi-ten steel frame and a 3-piece crank. The L100 steps up to a 4130 chromoly frame and a 2-piece chromoly crank.

Is Mongoose a real BMX brand?

Yes. It began in 1974 as BMX Products, Inc., with the Motomag wheel as its first product, and it has sponsored BMX racers since the late 1970s.

Which Mongoose is best for a beginner?

For a 20" rider, the Legion MX or L10. For a smaller rider, the 18" Legion L18, or an 18" Skid or Switch with training wheels.

What size Mongoose BMX bike do I need?

For Title, use the height table. For everything else, use wheel size (12" to 24") and ask us if your rider is between sizes.

Do Mongoose kids' bikes come with training wheels?

The 18" Skid and the Switch 18" do. Check the listing for the size you're buying.

Can my child race on a Mongoose Title?

Title bikes have BMX race geometry and are built to go from the pump track to the race gate. Check your local track's class and equipment rules, and message us if you're unsure of the size.

What is the Mongoose Supergoose?

A 1979 BMX classic. Mongoose's limited reissues copy the 1984 loop-tail frame, with 4130 chromoly, Pro Class rims and Dia-Compe MX brakes. We don't have one right now, so message us for a close match.
